CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The issue of poor academic performance among Business Education student in Colleges of education has been of much concern to all and sundry. The problem is so much that it has led to the widely acclaimed fallen standard of Education in Nigeria at large. Aremu (2001) stress that learning outcome has become a subject matter of important to stakeholders. (Educational psychologist, teacher, academic, school administrator and managers, policy makers and planners, counselors, psychometrician parents etc.)in Education and to a large extent to students who are the direct beneficiaries or victims of the outcome.
Study habits of the business educational students is a serious problem in education because educational agencies have not made it possible to expose students to study skills most lecturers, parent and guardians do not make effort to ensure that students develop good study habits. The common resultant effort is that most of the students run into problems. It is however work knowing that many students feel bad about examination failure, it is a matter of concern to them. They are usually interested in knowing how to study better because lack of proper study habits leads to low scores which may in turn cripple one’s career development success in academic courses could depend on efficient study habit.
Study habits are learning tendencies that enable students to work privately. Azikiwe (1998) describes the study habit as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private readings after classroom learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”. According to her, “good study habit are good assets to learners because they (habits) assist students to attain mastery in areas of specialization and consequent to learning excellent performance, while opposite constitute constraints to learning and achievement leading to failure”.
Good (1998) defined the term study habits as the student way of study whether systematic, efficient or inefficient etc.”.
Going by this definition, it literally means that good study habit produce positive academic performance while inefficient study habit leads to academic failure.
Some students differ in their study habits some study for a long period while other will only have ability to read for a short period.
There are students by role memory, also there are students who rely on listening to the lecturers intrusion again, there are students who can only read during the day while some read only in the right or early in the morning or at anytime.
Bruner (2002) suggested that good study habits increase the learner’s ability to learn related materials, it fosters an interest in the activity itself rather than in the ward which follow from the learning. Good study habit develop ability to approach problem in a way that will more likely lead to a solution. It makes material that is learned easier to retrieve.
Again, Harman (2003) state that good study habit extends experience and stimulates good method of thinking. It helps to develop standard or appreciation and taste in the selection of materials. It develops the necessary good habits for self development and success in academic work.
