INTRODUCTION
Background to the study
Poor academic performance of students had been a matter of concern to Nigerian education. it is accepted that individuals differ in potentialities and abilities. Some students are good in all subjects they study some do well in language arts but not in mathematics, science and related subjects. Some have difficulty in expressing themselves in language but show interest in Mathematics, others are generally good academically. Previously studies had shown that the academic achievements in students are usually affected by the socio-economic background of students. Student who came from more favorable environment usually perform better in achievement and intelligence or aptitude test than students from low socio-economic background. (Owoseni 2011).
Considering the standard of education in Nigeria today and the concern of both the parent and the government over the achievement of the students, it is essential that the quality of education in Nigeria should be improved upon. The improvement of Nigeria school children contains series of actors which can affect the scholastic achievements.
The leaners’ performance is partly as a result of environment in which one grows up. Another factors is the mental value and e encouragement research has shown that the subjective measure of the attitude and aspiration of parents are more important that the objective measure of material environment by itself (Adigin, 2000).
Furthermore, student from high socio-economic background live in a better and conducive environment than those from low socio-economic background. They are spurred to higher academic attainment than those from low socio-economic background.
A study of the students home and school variables had been undertaken in order to examine the relationship between the environment of child and his metal ability and achievement.
