CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
INTRODUCTION
Most parents have great dreams for
their children. They want them to be happy and successful in their home and
lives, but they know that inspite of the folk music, wishing will not make it
so in question they ask is “what will make it so” or more answerable what will
help make it so?”
This essay tries to give us something
that are likely to help. There is no guarantee, but latest research in child
development strongly suggest that there experience.
Expressing the other way around, we
can now say that if certain kind of experience are not provide for a baby
during the first three years of life, the chances of his reaching the intellectual
potential was born with are probably reduced.
David Smiton (1970) says that “if you
take two babies born with equal natural gifts and leave one to lie in his cot
for hundreds of hours staring enjoyable and intellectually stimulation play the
second baby will build and advantage that will pay off in school and throughout
his life”.
The bright side of what research has
to tell us is this. The most helpful sorts of experiences for child are not
only easy for parents to supply, but are great fun for both parent and child
and they have all sorts of added benefits as side effects.
Playing with toys will help the child
develop basic skills such as focusing the eyes, co-ordinating the eyes and
hands, distinguishing differences among almost identical objects. Skills that
will have an immediate reward in fun and later reward in the ability perform
more complicated jobs such as reading and thinking.
In addition, baby will learn that
learning is enjoyable; he will get satisfaction not only from activity itself,
but also impart to the child some basic fact about himself and the world around
him. The sooner will have a confidence that is essential to many aspects of
life, but in particular to the inclination to explore that is to learn.
Another great benefit of the use of
toys can be the way it builds in you a sense of joy, love and accomplishment
with your child. You have a feeling of participating so much more in growth,
rather than just observing with it immediate excitement and in the long run a
much riches store of memory.
Those toys are a curriculum. This is
not a set of lesson plans, but suggestion and ideas for enhancing development.
There are many ways to provide
experiences there are not fixed tasks and no notion that if your child does not
progress smoothly, page, he will be doomed. The basic principle is that you
should provide him with many interesting opportunities to learn, to explore, to
interact with you.
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Playing with toys is as important to
normal development as other things like food, clothing and shelter.
The child starts playing very early with
his fingers and his mother’s body or any person, thing they could come in
contact with. As the child grows, he
reaches out for other objects to play with.
Here come in the need for joy. In
other words toys can important role in the development of the child.
As the child plays with toys he
learns grows and develop at the same time.
For instance, parents seek to aid giving toys that can make the
exploratory action more effective since such toys contributes more to the
movement of the child.
Playing with toys helps the child
more in constructive tendency. Every
child enjoys making things just for fun of doing it is important to note that
skills learnt during the early childhood play do along was not only to forming
foundations for muscles skill, but also developing favourable attitude for work
of similar nature as grows older.
Constructive toys like modeled shovels and plastic buckets, large
crayons and clay block are of vital importance to pre – school age.
At age 1 to 3 years until the child
goes to school, every child enjoys imaging that he is some one else doing something
he has heard about in stories for in the pictures in dramatizing as different
characters the child learns the mode of dressing tone of speech in which their
parents interest in it has declined over the years rather than when just wooden
doll was been given to the child to play with.
Parents count lesson toys in recent years, which should not be. There should be changes and improvement on
the use of toys in the development of the child.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
About the declining nature of using
toys personal observation from both educated and illiterate parents show that
parents make uninspiring statement nature and getting lost easily. Careless attitude of most parents towards the
toys would to large extent adversely affect the contribution of toys toward
materials have been improvised than that in the olden days when leaves and
flowers (in natural form) were given the child as toys.
However, most parents consider it as
waste since the material get damaged easily if not handied properly.
The cost of toys is rather very
high. Most parents could not afford
it. The knowledge to be got by the child
from such toys is totally absent. Since
the parents have falled to provide the toys.
Most toys are not durable. The
nature discourages most parents from buying it for their children. Some parents have not seen toys as an
important material in the development of the child and so they pay less
attention to it. This adversely attract
the child’s early learning most parents lack the appreciate choice of toys
especially for the child.
Lack of standard day care centres
affects the child play using toys. The
nanny’s pays little or no regard to the use of toys.

To
find out the reason for toys use and non use.
3)
To
identify the problem a child can face without toys.
4)
To
find out the sources for toys used are obtained.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
One of the essential matter in child
development is play in which they would exercise all parts of the body and
develop muscles of well.
Moreover, some satisfaction of the child
could be met by play which other aspect of life cannot meet. For example, the leadership instinctive
tendency could be exercised over their friends when they are together to play
with their toys.
In addition, the wordless books full
of pictures could be a source of learning to the child that cannot have
opportunity to learn at home or in school.
In plays with toy children through
experimentation, discover that creating something new, can be of satisfaction
they can then transfer their discovery to the normal or real world.
In play, children create the
acceptable and desirable habit from contact with member of his peer group. The child learns so many aspect of life
patience sense of co-operation generosity, truth and chooses to be accomplished
with desirable of friends.
Play and toys, nowadays are aspect of
child’s life, which parents do not as such consider important. They do not consider the role it plays in the
child’s development. The knowledges and
experience one should have in the imitation, exploration testing and
construction.
Play makes in – numerable
contribution to the development of the child, viewing this and many other
prompted the researcher to enlighten parents, guidance and other readers of he
research about the functions of toys as a tool in child’s development.
