A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS BETWEEN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS BETWEEN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL
ABSTRACT
The write up attempts to investigate the comparative analysis of students performance in mathematics among private and public secondary schools in Omuo-Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area in Ekiti State.
In view of this, the researcher went through six (6) selected secondary school in Omuo Ekiti East Local Government Area and collected data in some achievement test results of 2010, 2011 and 2012 academic sessions. The achievement test is the senior school certificate examination results. The six (6) schools are of two types, that is, three (3) private secondary schools and three (3) public secondary schools.
In the analysis percentage method of statistics manipulation was used the result of the study evinced that, students in private secondary schools performed better in mathematics than student in public secondary schools.
In view of this, the following recommendation are made; that parents should send their children to private secondary schools because academic achievement of the student in private secondary school is far better than pupils or students in public secondary schools. Government and other educational agencies should embark on privatization of public secondary school for effective achievement of the national objective on education.

 CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Often parents, teachers and school management always heap blame on students whenever they perform poorly in mathematics either as a course or in examination at any level. How the question one may ask is who to blame when students fail in mathematics. Is it true that students don’t cultivate a good studying habit, show no enough interest in the subject or lack of computing skills (ability) as in necessary and lastly is it because of peer group influence which does not allow them to take their studies seriously as some researchers have rightly put it through their findings?
However, whatever is the reason for these lapses observed parents also share in the blame for their children failure or poor performance in the subject. The students studying mathematics needs encouragement, motivation and supervision from the parents to develop interest in studying the subject and to excel. Good books relating to the subject should be bought for the student and a private study arrangement with a teacher well-vested on the subject employed to help the students should be encouraged to approach the subject with love devoid of fear or intimidation.
On the other hand mathematics teachers should be one who knows the subject well enough to be able to transfer knowledge to the learning students. He should do this with love, be patient with the learner and be ready to explain again until the students get it right.
Both the teacher and students of mathematics should study in a conductive environment. Studying facilities should be put in place just as some researchers said that for better result to be reached in teaching and learning, the environment at which it is carried out must be conducive.
1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The importance of secondary education cannot be over emphasized. However, secondary education is the second institution in our education system as the name implies that prepares pupils or learners for a higher level of education. A very sound and solid secondary education is highly needed, it is likened to a house built on a rock which nothing can shake or move it.
Secondary education should be designed for children between the ages of twelve and eighteen as to inculcate permanent literacy and innumeracy, develop the needed abilities to communicate effectively and to lay a sound basic for scientific thinking.
The curriculum  of education stated that secondary education is catering for children of twelve and above. This is in line with the national  policy on education which stated that secondary school are to produce students for tertiary schools or vocational studies which in turn prepare children for life and reflect what their future will be. In view of this the standard of mathematics education inculcated the learners either in private secondary school or public school will determine  their performance in mathematics at the end of their programmes.
Although, people generally believe that, private secondary school students performed better than their counterparts in public secondary schools hebay, 1972 without considering some particulars which make those achievements possible and feasible.  All the same, there are some public secondary schools which performed better when compare with private secondary schools. But, this project is capable of satisfying our faith and answer to most of the question that can surface under this theme.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The fact here is that, students are suppose to spent most of their reading time in solving mathematics and developed interest in the study of mathematics knowing fully well that the subject is the bed rock of any endeavour in pure science.
The researcher interest on this topic “A comparative analysis of students performance in mathematics in private and public secondary schools in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti state” was to know whether private secondary schools do perform better than public secondary schools in Omuo Ekiti. And if they do, then what factors lead to their differences.
1.4 PURPOSE OF STUDY
The purpose of this project is to compare the analysis of student performance in mathematics among private and public secondary schools in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti state. The project would also look into what motivate d the parents, guidance and learners in developing more interest in private secondary school, it will also shed more lights on some areas of weakness of learning and teaching to attain good performance in mathematics in both private and public secondary schools and also look critically at the financial background and environment of both the private and the public secondary schools.
1.5    RESEARCH QUESTION
The following questions were encounter in this study;
I.                   What really ascertain the difference in academic performance of private and public secondary schools in mathematics
II.                To what extent do teaching perception of teachers` affect students performances in mathematics.
III.             To what extent do parental factors affect students’ performance in mathematics?
IV.            What problem of teaching and learning environment really affect students performance in mathematics’
1.6 RESEARCH  HYPOTHESES
The null hypotheses (Ho) are then stated thus:
I.                   private secondary schools do not significantly perform better than public secondary schools in mathematics.
II.                Teaching perception of teachers do not significantly affect students  performance in mathematics
III.             There is no significant difference in parent socio-economic performance in mathematics.
IV.            There is no significant difference in teaching and learning environment.
                      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
i. it will the educational agencies and government ministry of education to reach a concrete conclusion as to what type of secondary school embarked on would be beneficial to the pupils and the government and help to achieve the national goals in education as stated in the curriculum.
ii parents and guidance will have positive thinking and better understanding as to whether to send their children to either private or public secondary schools.
iii it will help to shed more light and endure useful information in the achievement of student in both private and public secondary schools.

1.8     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This project focuses mainly on the students’ performance in the mathematics both in private and public secondary school.
Though, the study is a generalized issue which is thus expected to cover all private and public secondary schools in Ekiti state and Nigeria as a whole. But with the situation of things like scarcity of fuel, transportation problems, constant road accident, industrial strike action embarked upon by teachers instructors or educators the research is restricted to Omuo-Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti state.
1.9                     DEFINITION OF TERMS
PRIVATE    SCHOOLS
These are schools owned and controlled by individual or group of individual or organization who have direct power or authority to  fire or sanction any staff who fails to abide by their rules and regulation.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS
These are schools owned and controlled by government by providing or appointing principals to supervise the work of all the staffs. They make sure government rules and regulations are strictly followed for effective performance. That is, they are indirectly controlled and managed by government.
