ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to measure
the extent to which parents influence the career choice of their children right
from secondary school level. The research was designed to find at the extent of
the influence of parents on the career choice of their children using Ikere
Local Government Area as a case study. Research instruments for data collection
were questionnaire and personal interview. The instruments were personally
administered by the researcher on the sample randomly picked from the study
population. It has been observed from the research that may parents do not know
certain pre-requisite consideration needed of a child before embarking on career
choice or occupational preference of their children and many parents have less
care for their children’s career development and so are careless about the type
of occupation their children choose even if such a child approaches them. That
is the main reason why the life careers of young ones have been ruined
permanently. However, the research revealed that boys from Low socio-economic
status homes are influenced by their parents in career choice while their
female counterparts are not influenced.

ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background
to the study
Every
society whether simple or complex, developing or developed has its own system
of educating and training its youths. Differences could only be seen in goals,
tempo and method of approach. In order to understand the Nigerian child in
relation to his career needs, it is necessary to consider how the child’s
position has been conceived.
The
aim of education in the pre-literate and pre-industrial Nigeria was job
oriented Education was aimed at producing youths who would not only be useful to himself, his extended
family, but also to the society as a whole.
A
the family level, parents get children to learn and acquire whatever skill or
trade that was running in the family through direct supervision and combine
guidance from nuclear family as well as the extended family. Where individual had
to make a choice, sufficient guidance
would have been sought from either the priest or wise men or women in the
locality. It must however, be noted that guidance or advice given was based on
any psychological analysis. Where a skill was not available in a family,
children where apprenticed to other families where such skill was practiced.
In
African societies, career choice of children is influenced by parents. The
apprenticeship system showed that children future job /career was already
tailored for him. Some occupations were seasonal and because of this, it was
possible to combine two or three occupations that would not be easily affected
by weather or changing season. Some even carried a dual profession that is
fully practiced one during the day and the other at night. For example, one
could be a farmer as well as a hunter.
The
situation described above has not changed so much despite the introduction of
western education. the reason for this might be because African parents are
very particular and too anxious about the future of their children. The major
point that parents of today have not realized is that children of today are not
thesame as in those days because they are not being influenced by both social
and technological change and development.
The
effect of this is that the career advices being given by parents are often in
adequate and in some cases children are being misled either as a result of
ignorance or selfish motives of some parents. This type of situation has often
resulted into career dissatisfaction and
maladjusted of children in later years. In view of the fact that the whole
process of human growth and development; and in view of the huge amount of
money the Federal Government of Nigerian has spent and still spending on
Education and the economic implication of career maladjustment it is necessary
to have a close study with the sole aim of having solution or at least
minimizing career imposition by parents.
STATEMENT
OF THE PROBLEM
It
could be observed that many parents notwithstanding their academic status or
not know certain pre-requisite considerations needed of a child before
embarking on career choice, many parents have less care for their children’s
career development and 50 careless on the type of occupation their children
choose even it such a child approaches them. This is one of the reasons why
many youths have been ruined in their career.
At
the beginning of early adulthood, many young people know exactly what they
heart to do when they leave school and they are motivated and enthusiastic,
several others finding themselves drifting into unsuitable or “dead end” jobs
where they may be frustrated and unhappy. Sometimes they enter the job world
with completely pseudo aspiration and expectations so that they rapidly become disillusioned and
depressed. Usually, vocational maladjustment may occur if the individual
chooses an inappropriate occupation because of his occupation because of his
inadequacy to understand himself, or because his occupational stereotypes are
in error. Moreover, some rich parents want
their children to go into high rated professions such as medicine and law
without considering if the child’s interest is their. This sometimes leads the
child to a confused end. Even when such child excel in that course through some
dubious means by his parents, the child ends up acquiring a certificate without
knowledge and consequently the child may become dejected in life.
Observation
tends to suggest that there are much parental influence on career choice of
secondary school students in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. The
problem of the present study is to investigate the effect of the parents on the
students in terms of their career choice.
OBJECTIVES
OF THE STUDY
The
aim of this study is to examine the influence of parental socio-economic on the
career choice of their children. The objectives are to;
i.
investigate whether the career choice of
students are influenced by educational background of their parents
ii.
investigate whether student’s choice of
career are influenced by the socio-economic status of their parents
iii.
determine the extent to which the
student’s choice of career are influenced by the occupational preferences of
their parents
iv.
investigate whether the career choice of
students are influenced by the cultural background of their parents.
RELEVANCE
OF THE STUDY
Education
today has become the most potent force of progress in spheres of human
endeavours-social, political and economic. A system of Education is bound
to satisfy the needs of the society
where it is sited or else it will cause irreparable harm to the society. This
study would assist to offer suggestions on ways parents can guide or advice
their children on career choice. It would also be useful for guidance
councellors in school to assist students to the parents on how to pilot their
children career choice. The study would also contribute to the various studies
carried out by scholars and authors in the field of career choice.
This study will be of significance to
the large society which education is meant to serve. The following are the beneficiaries
of this study.
Students: students will benefits from
the study in the following ways, if for the finding of the study it is
established that parents pressure their wards into certain carriers for the
which the wards have no requisite success indices (attitude, interest, ability
etc) thereby programming them to fail. The result of this study may lead to the
appropriate for (PTA, etc) to correct this anonymously thereby allowing students to choose carrier of
their choice that may lead to their success in such carriers and become useful
individuals to themselves and the society.

HYPOTHESIS
Below
are the hypotheses put forward to be tested in this work
i.
There is no significant different in the
influence of parental interest and choice of career
ii.
There is no significant different
between the study orientation about luck and destiny on their choice of career
iii.
There is no socio-economic status on
parent and their children choice of career
THE
STUDY AREA
The
project work covered Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. The Local
Government consists of Ikere urban and six [6] village as follows:
Ayeye, Ayede, Aba-Aso, Aba-Oyo,
Aba-Aloba, Aba-Okondo And Igbo-Ijan
The
Local Government is located on latitude 90 55 and 90 69
East of the equator and longitudes 70 19c and 70 22c East of Greenwich meridian. It is bounded in
the North by Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State and bounded in the
South by Ado Local Government which is the state capital while in the East it
is bounded by Ise-Orun Local Government and bounded in the West by Ekiti South
West Local Government Areas.
Ikere
Local Government covers n area of about 465 square kilometers. Its east to west
extent stretches for about 26 kilometers and the south to the North stretch is
about 30 kilometers,
The
Local relief is about 400 meters above the sea level in the south. The
landscape is dotted with rounded inserberge and step sided hills of volcanic
origin such as order Hill near Amoye Grammar School, Olosunta Hill beside Eleyo
High school Ugele Hill near African church comprehensive high school.
Ikere-Ekiti,
also known as Ikere, is a city in Ekiti State of Nigeria, in Ikere local
Government. It is an agrarian town. According to the 1991 census, the
population was 59,257 but more current estimates put it at more than 100,000
