THE EFFECT OF BROKEN HOMES ON PUPILS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED PRIMARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

          The research examined the effect of broken homes on the academic performance of pupils in all primary school in Moba Local Gvoernment; two hundred pupils were involved from different school in Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

          The instrument used for data collection was student questionnaire and teacher’s questionnaire as well as the individual academic performance of the pupils involved. From the result, it was found out that ;

-         Broken homes affect pupils academic performance

-         Broken homes affect academic performance of pupils in primary schools

-         Broken homes cause pupils to have emotional disturbance

-         Attitude of child from broken homes affect academic performance in primary school

-         Broken homes affect pupils from doing their homes work always

Thus, both parents should make all effort to stay together in order to help their children achieve higher academically. This is because no matter how little, broken home always have adverse effect on the children form such homes especially in their academic performance.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the study

          An important and most publicized aspect of broken home is the effect it has on children after a marriage has been dissolved; the children as well as the couple suffer its consequences.

          Cultural customs influence divorce so too does personality, for example when women see themselves primarily as wives and mothers and subordinates their needs to those of their families divorce is less likely. But on the other hand, when woman focus on their potential for growth and achievement, tolerance or unhappiness drops, and divorce rate rises.

          The child who lives with one of his parents is deprived of many things and the level of his former standard of living will fall if the child lives with another family he or she may not feel at home often.

          When parents remain in a distressing marriage, there is evidence of reduced parenting ability and problems in children. Adolescents experience felling of increase inability and stress, conflicting loyalties, anger and worries about their parents and their own future.

          Therefore, this study is out of examine the effects of broken home on the child’s academic achievement.

Statement of the problem

          Many research findings have established the fact that 50% of adolescents are from broken homes.  In the present socio-economic situation, many parents have little or no time for their children.  Hence, the way a child is brought up by his parents will have a tremendous impact on his academic performance.

          This has manifested itself in the poor performance of pupils in the primary school leaving examinations.

          Thorndike (2000), in his law of mental act, said that lack of mental set brings set back in learning. This implies that adolescent would find it difficult to learn if there is any unresolved problems that is troubling them. Also many children that possess ability cannot succeed because they believe that they have disabilities which cannot be overcome.

          It is also observed that children from distrusted families tend to have lower socio-economic and educational attainment and also higher rate of instability in their marriage. This study is therefore geared towards examining the effect of broken homes on the child’s learning outcome.

Research question

The following research questions were formulated to guide the study;

a.                 Does broken homes affect pupils academic performance?

b.                 Does the child from broken homes has regular attendance in the school?

c.                  Does pupils from broken homes has emotional disturbance?

d.                 Does attitude of child from broken homes has regular at attendance in the school?

e.                  Does pupils from broken home always doing their home work?

Purpose of the study

          The study intended to examine the effects of broken homes on the academic performance of pupils in some selected primary schools.

          This study is to examine whether there is any significant difference in the academic performance of pupils from broken homes and those from stable homes.

Significance of the study

          This study is an attempt to help both parents’ teachers, and the students in particular to observe if there is any relationship between parental separation and academic performance of the pupils in the primary schools.

          The study is intended to let the readers know and be aware of the damage a broken homes of family can do o the child academic performance.

          Also the main purpose of study parent child verses the home factors interactions is to generate and about what types of children result from broken homes atmosphere.

Limitation of the study

          The study is limited to the impacts of broken homes on academic performance. All other areas of human activities are not covered because of time constrains.

It is only the study of four primary school in Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Definition of terms

[1]     SEPARATION: - This exist when a man and his wife cease to live together. Separation could be by accident or by death. It could be legal or through mutual consent of the parties may be custodian of the children.

[2]     Adolescence: - Adolescence is a Latin word meaning to grow into maturity. It refers to the transitory period or stage the individual inevitable passes through in his growth from childhood to adulthood.

[3]     Broken Homes: - This refers to material disorganization or break up of love and understanding leading to a strained relationship between a hither to happily married couple. The marriage will be dissolved formally resulting in separation.

[4]     Emotion: Is an effective state of consciousness in which joy, sorrow, fear, hatred or the like is experienced distinguished from the cognitive and conditional state of consciousness.
