EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM IN THE BANKING INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA ( A CASE STUDY OF FIRST BANK PLC)

ABSTRACT

The research work introduced us to the use of computer as it is very necessary and useful  to management information system needed in improving the level of organization performance especially in Nigeria banking industry.

Statement of hypothesis, scope of study and definition of terms were discussed in chapter one.

Relevant books pertaining to the research work were review. Research methodology used for primary and secondary data, primary data was obtained through Questionnaire, Interview and empirical observation. While secondary data were obtained from review of available documents. Hypothesis were tested and analysis findings were summarized recommendation were made and conclusion was reached.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0    INTRODUCTION

1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In banking as we have in all industries the need for information is so important. This is simply because all thins being equal, good quality information aids good decision. Good decision leads to effective performance of managerial function and thus in herm should lead to the attainment of the organizational goal.

This age has been tagged information age because managers have all of a sudden become very aggressive its their chase of the quality information. The need for information is greater in banking because of the nature of the business. Quick and accurate decision must be made. This required timely and suitable information. Banks must react quickly to changes in interest rates and other volatile variables in their operations.

Extra care must be taken by banks in their decision making exercise because any wrong step can lead to loss millions of naira irrecoverable unlike in some other industries where error can be corrected and losses minimized wrong decision can result from inadequate on imprecise information.

The bank need for information has to be satisfied and this called for the introduction of computer to the industry. Indeed the banking industries has employed computer as early as other industries have. There are several reasons for this early introduction of computer eg To process and manage the information system of the bank for the industrial banks the need to automate its system is either of two things.

It could be as a result of an overload of operations, which the manual method cannot handle it, it may be as a result of the bank looking forward future development in the banking industries with an aim of improving it competitive position.

The different between banks, insurance brokerages house, savings, institution e.t.c is getting easy to define all re offering similar services to the customers. This exposure of the customers to many different institution offering the same or similar services makes them become very difficult to please to stay in business therefore, better service have to be offered by the banks and these come from good decision making which in itself is a product of information proper management of the information system can only obtain good information.

Considering the function of commercial banks in Nigeria such:

  • Mobilization of saving and other deposit
  • Granting of credit facilities to customers
  • Transfer of funds
  • Creation money
  • Safe keeping of variables
  • International travel services
  • Business advisory services
  • Brokerage services
  • Status inquires

There is a need for effective management information system in Nigeria banking industries for effective performance of these functions.

1.2    PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to:

  • Evaluate the impact of management information system in Lagos state banking industry.
  • Assess to effect of automated management information system in the industry
  • Measure the impact of automated MIS in the performance/ operation of commercial banks in

Lagos state.

To achieve the purpose of this research work the following hypothesis are formulated and tested accordingly;

  • Management information system aids data processing decision making planning and control in Lagos commercial banks.
  • Automated management information system improves performance/ operation of commercial banks in Nigeria.

1.3    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is very significance in that it will among other things:

  • Enable commercial banks in Nigeria to please their customers by offering better services which come from good decision which itself is a good product of information.
  • Identify areas, which need to be improving upon in order to satisfy banking community in Nigeria.
  • Prepare Nigeria commercial banks to meet international requirement for propose global network banking operation/service.
    • SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This scope of the study is limited to commercial banks due to time and financial constraints apart from that commercial banks is the most popular among banks majority of members of the public patronize commercial banks.

1.5    DEFINITION OF TERMS

Management information system (MIS) “It  can be defined as the field that occupies the space where management and technology overlaps”

If involves primarily as a result of computer and communication technologies development.

INFORMATION: “It can be defined as a word passing by one form to its subordinate” it can be through mail or writing steps.

DATA PROCESSING: “It can be defined as the procedure of transforming data into desires output” Data processing involve taking the raw data produced as part of the regular cycle and processing the data in to a more meaningful form.
