IMPACT OF PRINCIPALS LEADERSHIP STYLES AND SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

This research work centers on principal leadership styles and secondary school effectiveness in Akoko South Local government Area of Ondo State. He general attitude towards school effectiveness was determine, the subject used for this consist of fifty (50) teachers and (30) principals. The questionnaire was designed and administered and the data collected were analyzed using chi-square, four research questions were formulated.

The empirical research found that principal’s leadership style has a significant effect on secondary school effectiveness, teacher’s commitment to work and academic performance of students.

As a result of the above the following recommendation were made: the principal should apply democratic principle or leadership style, principals should use different motivational strategies to raise the morale and commitment of staff and student towards school effectiveness.

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Leadership styles in any organization including secondary schools are the management function and behavior which dictate the way forward to achieving the organizational or institution or institutional goals and objectives (Nwachukwu, 2001).

Expectation is great on the growth development and general well-being of secondary schools’ teachers and this is why the concern of people in all works of life about principals’ leadership styles is important because how secondary schools teachers are doing lies on the leadership styles of principals and when there is a creditable effectiveness of secondary schools, it will positively affect the growth and development of the society in the long run (Uche, 2004). The effectiveness in some secondary school teachers is attached to the leadership styles of their heads (principals) as it is argued that principals are the ones to show the way, to conduct, to guide, to direct, the course of others (staff and students) to stir the imagination of the people under them and lead them in achieving the set out objectives, therefore to a large extent their principals’ leadership style count.

Thousands of research work has been done on principals’ leadership styles and thus, the field is almost saturated. It was noticed that great importance is attached to principals’ leadership styles in teachers’ effectiveness.

The reason for this is not far-fetched; it is because the success or failure of an organization is tied to the caliber of those who steer the ship of leadership as well as their leadership styles.

Ebutta, (1995) stated that “the principals’ leadership style is at the core in a school system.” No school head can succeed as a good administrator unless she inspires her subordinates to work harmoniously with her, and their good will and active operation. When the principal makes teachers feel that they are significant in the system, teachers were able to give their full support to the achievement of the school objectives.

Williams and Harry styles are directed with organizational performance. According to Okoro, (1986) “the success of any school in meeting it stated goals principally depends on its chief administrator also known as the principal and his leadership style.

Statement of the Problem

Purpose of the Study

This study is aimed at identifying some variables and to consider how they affect the principals’ leadership styles in achieving secondary school teachers’ effectiveness.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of principal’s Leadership styles on secondary schools teachers’ effectiveness.

Research Questions

Will there be any significant difference between principals’ leadership styles and impact on secondary school teachers’ effectiveness?
Will there be any significant difference between teachers’ and learners’ reaction to principals leadership styles?
Will there be any significant difference between teachers’ and learners’ commitment to work based on principals’ leadership styles?
Will there be any significant difference between teachers’ and learners’ performances to work based on principals leadership style?

Research Hypothesis

HO₁: There will be no significant difference between principals’ leadership styles and impact on secondary school teachers’ effectiveness.

HO₂: There will be no significant difference between teachers’ and learners’ reality to principals leadership styles.

HO₃: There will be no significant difference between teachers’ and learners’ commitment to work based on principals’ leadership styles.

HO₄: There will be no significant difference between teachers’ and learners’ performance to work based on principals leadership style.

Delimitation (Scope) of the Study

This study was delimited to thirty (30) secondary schools in Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State. It attention was on the impact of principal leadership styles on secondary schools teachers effectiveness.

Significance of the Study

The quality of this research study is to give the reader an insight into different leadership systoles that may exist in a school system.

This research helps people to know the good leadership styles (that is, Autocratic and Democratic Leadership Styles) and the appropriate time to use them so as to bring out the best of the secondary schools. It also clarifies what people misconceive about leadership styles in theory and practice toward the secondary schools teacher’s effectiveness
