CHAPTER ONE

  •          Introduction

Over the past two decades, the use of illegal drugs and misuse of therapeutic drugs have spread at an unprecedented rate and have penetrated every part of the globe. No nation has been spared from the devastating problem caused by drug abuse. Global increases in problems of illicit drugs both reflect and contribute to international tensions. The origins of some of these tensions are clear: rapid changes in political alignment, reduced family and community cohesiveness, increased unemployment and underemployment, economic and social marginalization and increased crime. The impact of drug abuse on youth, especially those in secondary has remained a source of worry to parents, schools, religious bodies, society and even the government because of the attendant misbehaviours that usually follow it have negative effect on the society and educational advancement cum achievement of the students. It seems to be the source one of the country’s major health challenge as well as social problems.

At a time when dramatic improvements are taking place in some sectors, e.g. communications and technology, improvement of the quality of life for many people has fallen far short of the potential that exists and the rising expectation of people who know life can be better. The global changes which have allowed Adolescents prefer an autonomous and independent life that is free from adult control, there by engaging in various delinquent acts (drug abuse, rape, robbery, cultism and vandalism) that are dangerous to the home, community, school and the nation. The impact of drug abuse among adolescents has been a stigma of moral decadence, violence, thugery, assault, madness and murder.

The menace of drug abuse has eaten deep into the fabrics of our society; however, with effective counselling programmes, the problems can be tackled through campaign against drug abuse by government and other relevant authorities Drug control counselling centres should be established in every community and qualified health counsellors should be employed in helping drug addicts by giving them special advice on how to go about the withdrawal system. Drug awareness units to be set up in all states by the federal, state and local government not to try people who use drugs as criminals, but to help solve their socio psychological problem.

1.2     Background of the Study

Okemesi – Ekiti is a major town in Ekiti – West  local government councils of Ekiti State of Nigeria Okemesi – Ekiti has its origin from Ile – Ife, the ancient seat and ancestral home of the Yoruba race. From historical records, there is blood relationship between Okemesi, Imesi – ile, Ile – Ife, and Ilesa. Okemesi – Ekiti is in the South – West of Nigeria, located within the tropical hinder – land in the rain forest area. It is located on latitude 7.820 North and longitue4.920 East and an altitude of 541 metres above mean sea level. The town lies between two ridges running approximately North – South which conjoin close to the Northern boundary and form the east and west limits of the undulating valley and low land that make Okemesi

Drug abuse is one of the problems of adolescences in Okemesi – Ekiti, this vice has rapidly increased and risen to unprecedented level which calls for serious concern. Drug and substance abuse is linked to the rising crime rate, HIV/AIDS prevalence, school unrest, family dysfunction, poverty and other malaise in the community. At the greatest peril are the youth who are deliberately and tactically recruited into the drug culture through personal factor, uncontrolled media influences and social exposure.

  • Purpose of the Study

This paper discusses the concept of drug and drug abuse, investigate the causes of drug abuse and it effect on the secondary school students in Ekiti State, a case study of Okemesi – Ekiti. The study also tends to find out:

  1. the causes of drug abuses
  2. how family background of adolescence affect their attitudes to drug abuse in Okemesi–Ekiti
  • the socio – economic characteristics of drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti
  1. how availability of the drugs in the community affect the drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti
  2. corrective measures are suitable for modifying behavior of drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti

1.4     Significance of the Study

This study is very important as it will help parents, education planner, society and the community at large to:

  1. know the causes of drug abuses
  2. know how family background of adolescence affect their attitudes to drug abuse in Okemesi–Ekiti
  • know how socio – economic characteristics of drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti
  1. know how availability of the drugs in the community affect the drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti
  2. have adequate knowledge of corrective measures are suitable for modifying behavior of drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti

1.5     Statement of Problems

This paper focuses on drug abuse, investigate the causes of drug abuse and it effect on the secondary school students in Ekiti State. The study will also attempt to find answer to the following questions:

  1. what are the causes of drug abuses
  2. how does family background of adolescence affect their attitudes to drug abuse in Okemesi–Ekiti?
  • what are socio – economic characteristics of drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti?
  1. how availability of the drugs in the community affect the drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti
  2. what corrective measures are suitable for modifying behavior of drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti?

1.6     Research Question

This paper investigate majorly the following questions:

  1. What are the causes of drug abuse in in Okemesi–Ekiti?
  2. Does family background of adolescence affect their attitudes to drug abuse in Okemesi–Ekiti?
  • How does socio – economic characteristics of drug abusers affect them?
  1. How availability of the drugs in the community affect the drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti
  2. How can educational planners help drug abusers in Okemesi–Ekiti?
  3. What corrective measures are suitable for modifying behavior of drug abusers in Okemesi?
