ABSTRACT
This study is carried out to examine
relationship of parents’ Educational Background and the Effect on their
children’s performance in English Language.
The study was divided into five chapters.
Chapter one deals with introduction
of the study and highlighted the following: statement of the problem,
significance of the study, Research Questions and purpose of the study.
Chapter Two is the Review of the literature
which some educationists have written on issues relevant to the topic of this
study.
Chapter three deals with methods and
procedures used in Collection of Data.
Chapter Four deals with the analysis
of the Data and Discussion of the Result obtained.
Chapter Five is the summary of the
whole essay with the findings of the research and the investigators suggested
recommendations. The researcher strongly
believes that this study will meaningfully contribute a certain quota to the
remobilization of problems caused to students’ performance in English Language
as influenced by their parental educational status.
Finally, it will also create more
avenues for further research in the same or related problem.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
It is a
common knowledge in this country to blame the poor academic performance of
students on the teachers. The schools
seen to be held wholly responsible because it is place to impart academic
learning. In other words, it is the
belief of the general public that the school or the teacher is the ‘alpha’ and
‘omega’ who could turn the children to academic genus.
While there has been a general
falling or depression in standard of education and the rate of which students
fail English Language at the Senior Secondary Schools in Nigeria, it has been
equally observed that there is a wide discrepancy in the academic achievement
and good grade in English Language of one student and another. Despite the fact that the students were
taught by the same teacher in the same classroom and school environment, they
still performed differently. This is
probably because of individual differences such as family background,
educational background of the parents, environment influences, genetic
background and financial problem against which ability develops. Any or some of these factors can make or mar
academic performance of the children.
Many studies have been carried out on students’ performances in English
Language when compared with other variables.
Oladipo (1994) says that ‘the mass failure in English Language at the
certification Examinations may be due to the fact that the parents of most
students are either not educated at the or only have primary school education’
Without
mincing words, it is quite dear that home is the first encounter of child with
the outside world and it is the first social agent whose main objective is to
develop the totality of the child; in other words, home, apart from its social
role, should also develop the intellectual, physical and emotional aspect of
the child.
Therefore, it
is generally assumed that children from well – educated families are more
encouraged in learning that the children from homes where their parents are not
educated or are half – educated.
According to Arogundade (1995) “… Those (children) from illiterate homes
can somewhat be backward because they do not see beyond their Moses and those
from literate homes are ridi in experience and better in outlook …”

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Based on all these, it is the
interest of the researcher to focus on the study of the relationship of the
parents’ educational background to their children’s achievement in the Senior
Secondary Schools and in English Language in particular. The research however, is tailored
specifically towards the children’s performance in English Language this
includes.
i.
Parental
attitude to their children
ii.
Medium
of communication at home
iii.
Issues
of dialects.
1.3
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The
investigation is to find out the relationship of the parents’ educational
background to their children’s achievement in English Language in some selected
Senior Secondary Schools in Ikere local Government Area of Ekiti State. It will find out whether students from
educated homes achieve better in English Language than those whose parents are
not educated.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
i.
Are
the performances of students in Ikere local government poor in English as
speculated?
ii.
Is
the parents’ educational background significantly contributing to poor
performance in English Language?
iii.
Can
the level of the achievement of a student be attributed to the parents?
1.5
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
As the topic
of the project implies this study will enable the researcher to know the
relationship of the parents’ achievement in English Language. It will be of good help to the educational
administrators, parents and guardians will also benefit from the study because
will enlighten them and help to correct their biases.
1.6
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The irregularity
in the school calendar in the country sets a limitation on the study.
There is also
the problem of finance in carrying out the research.
Finally, the
time within which the project must be completed also serves as a major
limitation to how for the investigator could go in the process of research.
