CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Instructional materials are equipment that are used to make teaching easy in classroom. Instructional materials is fast gaining ground in most secondary school and higher institution in the country.  Instructional materials results in more effective learning of factual  information and skills in less time than more verbalization Onyejemesi (1990). Effective use of instructional materials has contributed to the awareness of the student to have enough interest in Agricultural science. It gives the motivation of the student to move closer in the viable and it shows clearly and highly evitable to promote the Agricultural sciences in secondary schools. Teaching is activities undertaken by a more experienced and knowledgeable person in order to make others learn.
Teaching involves influencing someone to change one's attitude.
Teaching can be defined as the guidance of students through planned activities so that they acquire the richest learning possible from their experience.
Hunter 1996 defined teaching as the process of making and implementing decisions, before, during and after instruction to increase the probability of learning.
It can be deduced from the above definition that teaching content, style of the learner and behaviour of the teacher. Agricultural science is the production of crops, cultivation of land rearing of animal for human consumption purpose.
This contributed to the economy growth of a nation as whole the partial of Agricultural take a lot of role in human activities to enhance the wealth, income exchange to good and services.
Both small scale and large production of crops and animals has effectiveness in the life of human being.
The aim and objective of Agricultural science in secondary schools include:
  1. To promote meaning and practical application of the content of other subject matter area such as sciences.
  2.   To develop understanding of the influence of the public policy on agriculture.
  3. To provide guideline regarding the occupational activities of on farm and off farm ventures requiring skill and knowledge.
  4. To develop understand of the interrelationship of agriculture and other segment of society.
  5. To develop mechanization fanning and practiced by farmers.

Statement of the problem
Olaitan 1986 observed that in most of the secondary schools the needed teaching aids are not available due to lack to fund and where it is available is not adequately used by teacher. This leads to poor performance of student in their final year examination. Thus, this research is carried but to ascertain the identification of instructional materials and how they are been used in teaching and learning process.
Purpose of the study
The major purpose of the study was to identify the instructional material for teaching Agricultural science in secondary school.
Specifically the study soughs to:
1.       To identify the instructional material for teaching General Agriculture.
2.       To identify the instructional material for teaching crop science
3.       To identify the instructional material for teaching soil science
4.       To identify the instructional material for teaching Animal science.
5.       To identify instructional material for teaching Agricultural Mechanization
6.       How can teachers source for instructional materials?

Significance of the study
Information gathered from the study will throw more light on the availability, distribution, use, quality of teaching aids and it will provide basis for effective utilization of teaching and learning of agriculture in secondary school.
The  outcome  will  help  to  ascertain  the  need  for use  of instructional materials in teaching Agricultural science in secondary schools.  It will enable the pursuits, principle, teacher, government to see the need to support school in farms of providing instructional materials.   Identify the necessary teaching aids needed for teaching agricultural science in schools.
Research question
This study provides answer to the following questions:
1.       What are the instructional materials for teaching?
2.       What are the instructional materials for teaching crop science?
3.       What   are   the   instructional   materials   for   teaching   Animal science?
4.       What are the instructional materials for teaching soil science?
5.    What are the instructional materials for teaching Agricultural Mechanization?
6.       How can teacher source for instructional materials?

 Delimitation of the study
This   study   is   delimited to   focuses   on  the   identification instructional materials by teacher in the teaching of Agricultural science in secondary schools. Assumption of the study
The teachers are performing there best in the teaching of Agricultural science by making use of improvise materials.
Definition of terms
Agriculture: Agriculture is the art an science cultivating a piece of land to produce crops and rearing of farming animals for man's use. It also involves production of raw materials such as cotton, cocoa, and coffee for industries.          Instructional materials: As the faculties used to made a teaching in classroom as a teaching aid gives the student to have enough understanding in teaching of Agricultural science in secondary school.
Teaching:  This is the  guidance  of pupil  through planned activities so that they may acquire richest learning possible from their experience.
