PROBLEMS OF TEACHING BIOLOGY PRACTICAL IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS
CHAPTER ONE
2.1     INTRODUCTION
          As Nigeria tries to make a mark in techni
cal development, the teaching of biology has advocated for in recent times by the federal Government. This is because of the realization that biology and technology were the bed rock from which developed industrialized countries of the world evolved.
          All other aspects of human life revolve science that is to say without biology all aspects of life will be meaningless. Biology is quite interesting in advanced countries of the word where practical work is given the priority and students are able to see for themselves what is taught in the class.
2.2     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
          Biology as one of the science subject is bent in making one to be conversation with the environment he/she lives in appreciate the meaning of scientific life, to develop unbiased mind and to be intellectually homes with serve as ideal to the future citizen. Fortunately, it is a fact that Biology is the commonly chosen science subject of most secondary pupils are confirmed by the west Africa Examination council (WAEC) record. This project will concentrate on the teaching of Biology and the problem of teaching biology practical in selected secondary School in Akoko South East Local Government Area of Ondo State.
          One need to acknowledge that: There are many problems of teaching biology practical in School, some of the are”.
i         Lack of good laboratory
ii        Lack of qualified teachers
iii       poor attitude of Students towards practical works.
iv       Lack of modern equipments.
v        No excursion or field trips
vi       Inadequate instructional materials
          Getting same of these things are not easy, some are highly expensive, some equipment required teaching practical biology are out of stock.
          Also some Students have lost interest in learning biology practical.
          Most or all of these problems exists in most Schools and serve as barriers in the teaching of biology practical in such Schools.
2.3     STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS
          There are evidence of effective teaching of biology practical in School and this has affected the performance of student in biology. This could be due to lack of equipment and materials or lack of proper training of the teachers handing the practical.


RESEACH QUESTION
1.     Does teachers’ qualification has any effect on students’ performance in Biology practical?
2.     What is the attitude of student towards Biology practical?
3.     Does teachers’ qualification affect their competency?
4.     What is the attitude of teachers’ toward teaching of Biology practical?
5.     Is there enough equipment in the laboratory for effective teaching?
Has the government made any effort to supply enough equipment to the School laboratory?
