CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

     Background of the study

In a typical developing country such as Nigeria, education is seen as a ladder to the top as one’s pay packet gets fatter the more he advances on the rungs of education ladder. Parents therefore are usually prepared to give all. It will take to see that the children sail through successfully in their educational confident in their hope that the children will someday become the popular men professions such as law, medicine engineering, success are met at most other times but they are not, for reasons beyond their parent’s keen, it often happens that percents may feel their children can become anything into consideration factors as schools, family, personality and intellectual ability e.t.c

The best legacy the parents can give to their children is education. The earliest agency of education is the home, where the child is taught by his parents, brothers and sisters and by the general condition at home. The home is the initial foundation upon which other agencies of education later build the home influence the child’s most impression able years when he or she is below 10 years. The value of a good home is therefore very great.

The importance of parents socio-economics status to a child’s academic achievement cannot be over emphasized especially as the ability to provide the school materials and to guarantee economic security for the child depend on parents academic achievement in `                               senior school certificate examination. Thus parents in the high socio-economic class are in a better position to accord their children with sound education and the children will make better decision based on their education. High socio-economic parents will be opportune to arrange extra lesson for their children at home. This is with a view to helping their children to be high achievement at schools. This is contrary to the position of the low status class parents where it is difficult to have three square meals not to talk of providing qualitative education for their children.

Stone (2002) examined the effect of parent’s income on the school and summarized that children from poor home are likely to show to a great extent the effect of under nourishment, illness and lack of sleep. Furthermore, she said there is also likely to be negatively to be attitude to school.

Fraser (2006) found that the correlation between parent’s income and academic achievement is very high according to her, children from home’s where there is tension and insecurity due poverty will not do well in school. Children whose parents enjoy more prestigious position performed better than whose parents occupy the lower status position.

The differences in the value of each class can be attributed to the income of each class, if the income of each class, if the income is high the tendency of aiming toward high goals is their but if the income is low, you aim at lower goals, children of the working class always show a tendency to make less progress at school and in particular tend to leave school at an age then do their middle class contemporaries and their parents cannot cope with cost of education especially higher one.

Hence, their main ambition will be focused on security clerical job graduation from school, some will prefer to learn a job therefore the desire to work hard in school is not there

Majority of rich mother are no longer full time have wife’s but rather pursue full time business like their make counterpart and the perforation or single parents who have to work to sustain the home economically necessitations  the continual use of agency without any consideration for proper rearing of children.

Given the distance between home and work, the scarcity of transportation facility, the need to excel in professional carrier e.t.c. children support of their parents.
