CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
In Nigeria today, there is a general concern over the problem of indiscipline among students in particular because it constitutes a danger in our society. We read in the dailies about students of secondary schools behaving in ways that do not conform with norms of the society.
Discipline in modern term is not restricted to total disobedience to school rules and regulations, in addition it connotes positive participation in school activities especially teaching and learning, in all of these, self-control is the key ingredient which all agencies of education (the home, the school, the church or mosque, the education authority and the community) must assist the child to cultivate. In this regards, discipline is an integral part of education.
A number of reason have been advanced as possible causes of indiscipline behaviour among students, such reason include, school management that is lack of facilities and equipment in schools, lack of motivated qualified staff, lack of encouragement to teachers, school administration, failure on the part of the principal to promote cordial working relationship with the staff and students.
Insubordinates of staff to the principal lack of sincerity and devotion to duty and moral laxity of teachers and students, poor attitude to learning, poor home training, unrealistic expectation and in school with a view to identify the most potent ones among them.
Bloom and Slesnick, (1969) for instance, emphasized that the molding of the child is accomplished through person-to-person interaction and the family is the major agency through which this socialization takes place that is there is a relationship between structure and juvenile delinquency.
Oloruntimehin, (1974) and Abiodun, (1986) found that children from broken home as well as children who have access to phonographic material engage in delinquent acts, such as sexual activities and stealing.
According to Sheviakor and Red, (1986) as cited by Oyesola, (2000). Factor attributed to misconduct in schools are frustration, inhibition, broken homes, ill-health, personal Maladjustment, dissatisfaction in school work, emotional unrest in relationship to others, disturbance in the classroom climate, lack of harmony between  classroom, control and the need of a student for  emancipation, emotional strains that accompany sudden changes from one activity to another and composition of the classroom group.
Ipeye, (1989), also explain the concept of discipline as the one which encompass theoretical and modes of behavior, reality which shows clearly the dividing line between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors and as a practice which relate to normative modes of doing things within a given time.
Adesina, (1980), viewed indiscipline as the one which includes disrespect of school authorities, habit of individual, collective misbehaviors of the students and disregards for school rule and regulations.   Behavior modification is base on correction and control of misbehavior through direct instruction, reinforcement techniques, punishment-orientation techniques, and other modification approaches.
Mother and Goldstein (2001) explained that behavior modification assume that observable and measurable behaviors are good target for change. All behaviors follow a set of consistence rule. Methods can be developed for defining observing and measuring behaviors, as well as designing effective interventions. Behavior   can be changed maintained or shaped by the consequences of that behavior.
In addition these, the researcher intend to look into the opinions of parents and their involvement in the discipline of their children. I will also seek the co-operation of the teachers in employing modern ways of discipline students such as personal interaction with student.
Finally, the school counsellors should be fully involve in the discipline of students
