INFLUENCE OF HOME ENVIRONMENT ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PUPILS
ABSTRACT
          This study examined the influence of home environment on academic performance of pupils in Ikere local government area of Ekiti State.     One hundred (100) pupils were used in the research and data collected through questionnaire. The questionnaires were analyzed and interpreted using simple percentage. Based on the result of the research, it was revealed that the nature and limitation of the home contribute to the growth or development of the child, therefore, whatever makes a child academically sound can be traced on the type of environment in which the child develop. On the basis of the findings, it is recommended that the Parents should try as much as possible to take care and provide for their children’s educational needs, also, Parents should serve as good role models and great motivators by showing good example for their children to follow. Lastly, parents should have interest in the academic growth of their children.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
          According to Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary the home refers to a place where one lives, while environment refers to surrounding or condition a person lives.
          The influence of the home environment on the academic performance of pupils has recently been a point of concern of both parents, teachers and educators. It has been given consideration because of its importance on the scope of educational development of children. The home environment is seen as one of the factors that influence the academic performance of the children. Therefore, the home environment is given attention with regards to the academic performance of the children.
This study is based on the fact that the environmental factors influencing the academic performances of children are highlighted, looked into, assessed and proper recommendation made.
          The family background of the children is given due consideration as it affects the children’s development. The nature of child rearing, influences of both the peer group, playmates and family are also considered.
          There are many problems associated with children from different home background or environment and such problems differ from one environment to another.
It has been observed that children from poor background or illiterate home have either the problem of not understanding or speaking English. Their interaction with others is different they are always slow in understanding and mixing with other children.
          In the case of children from educated background there is progress in their academic performance because the home environment is one of the best determinants of the child academic growth. On the other hand, children from enlightened environment generally speak English as soon as they start to talk. Their reaction to things is better.
          Therefore, the purpose of this study is to bring into light what influences the home situation or environment has on the academic performance of the children.
          It should be noted however, that this case study is not meant to be of singular use either to the children concerned or the teachers’ but is also hoped that it will open ways to other researcher s’ for the educational development of children in Ekiti- State.
1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
          The focus of this study is to examine the influence of home environment on the academic performance of pupils in selected schools in Ikere Local Government.
1.3     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of home background on the academic performance of pupils. This study also intends to make recommendation towards correcting the problem faced as a result of the influence of home environment in a child’s early development.
1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study will make it easier for parents to discover the importance of the home environment on the academic performance of their children. The study will also make parents realize the need for the children to complete every level of education in an adequate and well equipped learning facilities.
1.5     RESEARCH QUESTIONS
          The following research questions were formulated for the study:
(i)                Does the social life of children from enlightened home affect their academic performance?
(ii)             Does the social life of children from poor environment affect their academic performance?
(iii)           Do children from educated families perform better than children from illiterate families?
(iv)           Do children from high social economic background perform better academically than children from low socio- economic background?
1.6     DELIMINATION OF THE STUDY
This study was limited to Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. This study was also limited to the parents of primary school pupils in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. It sets out to know how far the home environment dictates the learning progress of the pupils.

(i)                Academic: This has to do with education or study.
(ii)             Environment: This refers to surrounding or condition a person lives.
(ii)             Family Background: This refers to the details of experience in a family.
(v)             Performance: How a pupil or learner scores in his subjects or studies.
