CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The cause of pupils negative behaviour towards teaching and learning of English.
Learning is the permanent acquisition and habitual utilization of the newly acquired knowledge or experience learning includes skills knowledge, ideas and experiences and this can be related to the three taxonomy of objective of education, that is
Cognitive domain: This is the set of educational objectives concerned with knowledge outcomes and intellectual abilities and skills. 
The Affective Domain: This has to do with attitudes, appreciations, values and mode of adjustment.  The psychomotor: This particular domain is concerned with motor skill, it emphasizes the manipulations of materials and objectives of such mechanical skills as sketching, charting map drawing etc.
To survive in this contemporary world people must continue to learn or acquire new skills or knowledge because of new inventions in technology.
Teaching can refer to occupation or profession, teaching can also mean activities undertaken by a more experienced and knowledgeable person in order to make other learn.  Teaching can be defined “as the provision for experience and guidance of activities designed to promote learning on the part of those engaging in the activities.  The learner learns through some activities while the teacher does everything that is possible to make learning possible for the learner.  Generally speaking teaching involves influencing someone to change one’s attitude or behaviour on the basis of new skill, knowledge and appreciation.
An investigation into the problems and causes of pupils’ negative attitude towards teaching and learning of English in some selected schools in Ile – Oluji Oke – Igbo local Government Area of Ondo State. Are:
Most of the male pupils frequently absent themselves from school and the reason is the parents do not make enough provision for their pupils schooling materials in terms of facilities like textbooks, school uniform, food, transport fare and other provision for daily use.  The trouble with the (father) parents in this area is that they love marrying more than one wife and the wives give birth to many children more than what a single man can care for adequately in terms of Education this is one of the reason for some pupils to go on looking for daily, pay job to support the little effort of the (father) parents.
Broadly speaking the study therefore aims at identifying the causes of teaching and learning problems of (some subjects such as English, with this view, it is hoped that the solution to such caused problems will help to improve the performance in the above mentioned subjects in examination and consequently increase the interest, self reliance and confidence to participate actively in societal activities.
Purpose of the study
The purpose of the study is to highlight the problems and causes of pupils’ negative behaviour towards teaching and learning of English language.  Also it will make it easy for parents and teachers to recommend the possible solution to the problems of teaching and learning of English language.
Significance of the study
This study will expose parents to the needs to enrich the learning environment of their children and will help the parents to recommend the possible solution to the problems of teaching and learning of English language.
It will also help the teachers to know the kinds of skills and methods to use in the class to enable individual pupils to develop personality, which satisfies personal needs and create new contents and it enable pupils to develop healthy social relationships, to develop self respect and express themselves individually.
Statement of the Problem
The main focus of this study is to examine the problems and causes of pupils’ attitudes towards the learning and teaching of English language in selected primary school in Ile – Oluji Oke – Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Research Questions
1)                Does the pupils have interest in the learning of English language?
2)                Does the English teacher teach the subject very well?
3)                Does the teacher use teaching aids and equipment when teaching the subject?
4)                How well equipped are the school libraries with English language textbooks?
5)                Did Government provide adequate staff and textbooks for the teaching of English language?
Hypothesis
The hypothesis form for studies are:
1)                There is no significant interest in pupils in learning of English language.
2)                There is no significant result which shows if the English teacher teaches the subject effectively.
3)                There is no significant evidence which shows either the teacher uses teaching aids and equipment when teaching the subject.
4)                There is no significant proof which shows how well the library of the school is well equipped of English language textbooks.
5)                There is no infallible proof that shows if the government provide adequate staff and textbooks for the teaching of English language.
Assumption and Limitation of the study
It assumed that the research project will enable any reader to find a lasting solution to the problems confronting the pupils studying English language in Ile – Oluji Oke – Igbo Local Government Area and other villages as well.  Also it is hoped that any researcher who wants to research further on this topic will find the project useful.
As regards the limitations the researcher suffered much stress in going over the selected school, e.g.
1)                St. John’s Anglican Primary School, Kajola
2)                St. Peter Primary school, Oke – Igbo
3)                Methodist Primary School, Ile – Oluji
4)                St. James’s Primary School, Ondo
5)                St. Mark Anglican Primary School, Oloruntele
Also, the financial support was somehow limit and some of my questionnaires mutilated by some of the pupils, but then, I was able to achieve my aim.
Definition of Terms
          Acquisition: This is the act of getting knowledge.
Behaviour: Is the way some body behaves
Habitual: Is a way that is annoying or difficult to stop.
Learning: Knowledge that you get from reading and studying.
Language: The principle means used by human beings to communication with one another.
Subject: An area of knowledge studied in a school, College etc.
Teaching: This means the work of a teacher.  
Teaching is also referred to as an attempt to bring about desirable change in the behaviour of the learner so that he would be able to master a large proportion of what he is being taught.
