THE PROBLEM OF TEACHING AND LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN MOBA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EKITI STATE
ABSTRACT
The study was to investigate the
parental background and academic performance of primary school students in Moba
Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
For primary schools were selected and in each school, students were
tested and interviewed. Questionnaire
were administered on the teachers in the selected primary schools to get the
authentic information about their academic performance of the students:
questionnaire was also administered on the students to get the real information
about the parential background.
Non – formal interview was also
conducted with the headmaster and members of parents teachers – association in
the selected schools.
Data collected were coded and
arranged into tables so as percentages were used to analyze the data continuous
assessment result were also collected to analyze the academic performance
progress of the students.
Through the investigation the
following facts were derived from the parental background and academic
performance of primary schools students.
Home background influence
i.
Socio
– economic background or status of the parent.
ii.
Poor
teaching habits of teachers.
iii.
Lack
of educational facilities in primary schools.
iv.
Absenteeism
of students and lack of attending extra moral lessons affect the performance of
primary schools students.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
The aim of every guardian sending his
or her children to school is to acquire education through learning which is
calculated to be most useful in his or her development.
It is the specific goal of the
teacher to determine whether stated educational objectives have been achieved
by the pupils. Actually, it is believed that the teacher is a person in the
best position to measure progress of each pupil towards stated goals as the
pupil move through the system. Obviously,
we find out that the opportunity of knowing the problem increased in teaching
and learning of pupils is easily detected by the teachers through evaluation
system.
This will surely create room for
possible solution for problems detected by the teachers unfortunately, it is
not easily known to the public the immediate result of the effort put on by the
teachers. It has been observed over the
years by the public that English language result of the primary school leavers
is now becoming worse and needs attention.
Through proper research the cause and remedies to the problems of pupils
concerning teaching and learning of English language in the primary schools can
be discovered. Although some parents
believe that the problem of pupils learning English language is as a result of
the poor attitude of some teachers who do not consider other factors
surrounding. The teaching and learning
of English language such as adequate materials and facilities environmental
factor and a host of others.
Therefore, for the purpose of knowing
the problems of teaching and learning English language in the primary schools,
there is need to collect facts from the teachers and pupils though, many people
would agree that there is an observable fall in standard of education in
Nigeria, nobody in his willest imagination would have believed that university
education in Nigeria has fallen to an abysmall low – level as a World Bank
study come up with a report that university education in Nigeria degenerated in
past is to 16 years. The Guardian
Newspapers quoted the World Bank sponsored study that, Nigeria
university graduates are poorly trained and unproductive on the job. Graduate skill have steadily deteriorated
over the past decade” (P.1) According to the report, the poor performance of Nigeria
graduates is particularly evident in two areas; poor mastery of the English
language and lack of prerequisite – technical skills.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It is consequently important to note
that English language is unknowingly used every body in the country. Therefore this makes English language a
compulsory subject and necessary every where.
Although, English language is relatively new when compare with other
branches of education, there had been a notion that there are a lot of problems
facing pupils or students in their usage of English language.
This opinion is subject to
verification hence, the aim of this study is to find out some of the problems
and as well possible solution to them to accomplish this, certain questions
need to be asked using some selected primary school in Moba Local Government
Area of Ekiti State as a case study.
This study examined the factors responsible for the poor quality of the
teaching of English as a second language in public primary schools in Nigeria.
Three research questions were passed
the questions examined the following three variables.
1)
Frequency
of the use of instructional media
2)
Frequency
of instructional techniques
3)
The
school learning environment.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The researchers main purpose of
carrying out this research project is as follows:
1)
To
look into the perception of teachers as regards the problems of teaching and
learning English language in schools.
2)
To
ascertain teachers roles towards the development of English language in their
respective schools.
3)
To
enlighten people about the roles of teaching in the use of English language.
4)
And
the need for government to remunerate English language teachers adequately.
RESEARCH QUESTION I
Do the teachers use appropriate
methods in teaching English language frequently, only items 1 and 6 met the
predetermined theoretical mean of 3.0. This means that the lecture method and
intensive reading of textbooks are the only teaching techniques frequently used
in public primary schools in Nigeria
for teaching English language. The group
and debate methods are occasionally used with means of 2.82 and 2.57
respectively.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is expected to find out
the various problems that English language pupils encounter and consequently
proffer solution to them. Therefore, it
is hopeful that this study would be useful to the following groups of people.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The emphasis of this study focus
mainly on the problems of teaching and learning of English language, using some
selected primary schools in Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti State as a case
study.

presentation of facts, ideas, skills, and techniques to student. although human beings have survived and
evolved as a species partly because of capacity to share knowledge, teaching as
a professions did not emerge until relatively recently.
