PROFITABLE MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUE FOR RAISING BROILERS FROM DAY – OLD TO NINE WEEKS: A CASE STUDY OF, COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IKERE – EKITI FARM

ABSTRACT
This project work was designed specifically to look into profitable management technique for raising broiler chicks from day old to nine weeks old.  This work was carried out in the College of Education farm, Ikere.
Five day old chicks were purchased from a reknown farm, Avian specialties, Ibadan.
These chicks were brooded artificially in a made shift room with a clinical thermometer to regulate the room temperature.
The chicks were later transferred into a deep litter pen after twenty – one days, where they were raised to market weight.
Litters were changed on a two – weekly interval.  The chicks were fed ablibitum on broiler starter for three weeks and broiler finisher for six weeks respectively throughout the period of the experiment.
Vaccines and drugs were administered on the chicks as soon as the need arose.
One mortality was recorded from the population.  This represent 0.5 percent of the population.  Forty – nine birds were raised to an average market weight of 2.4 kilogram per bird.
From the study, if chicks are purchased from a good source, and if the temperature generated at brooding could be regulated, a degree suitable for the chicks, low mortality would be recorded during brooding.
Also, if litters are properly managed such that, there is no build – up of ammonia and no wet litters incidence of diseases will not be rampant.
For these reasons, it is suggested that better brooding facilities be made available by the government at affordable prices, so that farmers who are not knowledgeable could make use of the brooding pen.
It is suggested that farmers who can not afford a build – up brooding pen should adopt this method as it gives a good result.
Government should encourage the funding of this project work on a larger scale so that it can become a practice by all.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Poultry can be defined as those species of livestock that render economic uses to human being. Poultry, in one form or the other kept in most area of the world have fewer religious or social taboos associated with them, as compared with pigs and cattle.
Poultry are now a head of all livestock in economics, productive have increase remarkably.
The consumption of animal per head in any population is greater in developed countries and the contribution that poultry make to supply of animal protein vary from one area to another.
The diet of the population in the tropical zone is most often protein – poor, both in quantity and quality.
In Nigeria, poultry is kept mainly for meat because poultry meat is most appreciated than any other livestock meat it has taken an important place in the nutrition of the human race.
Poultry is also kept for egg and to many local farmers in Nigeria poultry are kept as a source of income and rarely for manure.
Broiler meat is preferred to beef because it contain high percentage of protein which is the basic structural material from which all body tissue are formed.
Protein is essential for human growth and development as well as foetal development.
Broiler are domesticated birds kept purposely for the production of meat, it can also be described as heavy and fast growing reared mainly for table meat.
Broilers require special attention in terms of management skill and up to date guide on health.
Some of the wild species of fowls from which the domestic fowl might have originated are listed below:
1)                Gallus lafayetti (Ceylonese jungle fowl).
2)                Gallus gallus, G. Bankiva or G. Ferrugineus (Red Jungle fowl).
3)                Gallus Sonneratti (Grey south west India Jungle fowl).
4)                G. Varius, G. Furcatus Java, lombok (Black or green jungle fowl).
The need for the poultry farmers to engage in large poultry production can not be over emphasized.
Firstly, keeping of poultry if well manage is a very profitable business.
Oluyemi and Roberts (1979) emphasized the importance of poultry as,
1)                The production of eggs and poultry meat are primarily food (protein food)
2)                Eggs are also used in various food industries like the manufacture of confectionery.
They are also used for manufacturing cosmetics and for the production of vaccines
3)                Feathers may be used for making pillows. Also for ornamental and decoration purposes.
4)                Some species of poultry are suitable for genetic, nutritional and physiological studies because of their relatively low cost of maintenance.
5)                It serve as source of employment to many and
6)                Poultry manure is also becoming important for maintaining soil fertility and there by increase crop productivity.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Having gone through the economic values and the dietary purpose serve by poultry generally it is very essential to study the management of Broiler chicks from day old to nine (9) weeks of age at the college of education farms Ikere – Ekiti.
The study will be of great importance to the college of community to identify the method by which broilers could be reared for productive purpose
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
In this study attempts would be made at identifying the rearing methods for broilers available at the college of education farms, Ikere – Ekiti. A close examination of the broiler unit of the poultry section of college farm would be made with a view to finding the rearing of broilers from day old to nine (9) weeks of age. Problems encountered during rearing and ways of alleviating such problems.
          To make policy recommendations towards the continuity of broiler rearing on the college farm. Within this contract, the project has the following objectives;
a)                 To find out the profit making in broiler business
b)                To make recommendations based on broiler rearing unit of the college of education farms, Ikere – Ekiti.
c)                 To recognize the particular breed of broiler chicks that will respond positive to effective rearing methods.
LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
To carry out this study, the following are the limitation of the study,
Firstly, the duration of the study was short. Late delivery of the broiler chicks to be used for the study.
