EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AND STUDENTS PERFORMANCES IN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
A CASE STUDY OF ADEYEMI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ONDO STATE
 

ABSTRACT
          This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between educational facilities and student performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo State.  The variable examined were staffing quota and students performances, survey of physical facilities and students performances, school environment and students performance and cordial relationship of lecturers and students performances in the college.  Descriptive survey research design was used for the study.  Population constituted the entire students of Adeyemi College of Education Ondo state,  from which 50 respondents were randomly selected.  Self constructed questionnaire approved by the researcher’s supervisor was used for data collection.  Retrieved questionnaire forms were screened, mutilated form were discarded while the good ones were coded and simple percentage and chi – square (X2) statistics were used for data analysis.  Hypothesis were accepted or rejected at a significant level 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) of 1. The four null hypothesis were rejected therefore, the four alternative hypothesis were accepted.  The finding reveal that there is significant relationship between the staffing quota and students performances in Adeyemi College of Education Ondo State, there is significant relationship between the survey of physical facilities and students performances in Adeyemi College of Education Ondo in Ondo State.
          There is cordial significant relationship between the lecturers and students performance in Adeyemi College of Education Ondo in Ondo state.
          Recommendations, Government should maintain the normal staff quote in the school to enhance high academic performances of the students in the college.  Social amenities and physical facilities should be provided by the government for the academic purpose and so on.

INTRODUCTION
1.1     Background of the Study
          With the recent trend in educational development in Nigeria we appreciate not only the extra ordinary growth of the nation’s educational system in all spheres but also the objectives and philosophy of its policy on education.
                    The relevance of education facilities, human and materials resources towards the achievement of educational goals can not be over emphasized.  Provision of educational facilities make learning in the school system more productive and manful.  Educational objective are enhanced when there are qualified teachers to handle specific subject and availability of required equipment for science and technical subjects that makes education.  More practical and involves the psychomotor domain in the educational pursuit.  Unfortunately, inspite the huge investments in education, there had been a number of problems facing the education system.  Most of the old and new schools are facing ‘resource crisis’
There are insufficient, inefficient and unstable personnel resources for the schools.
The learning programme is being jeopardized and this subsequently leads to the yearly declining in the students performance in their final examinations. What’s actually responsible for the yearly declines are the basic motive behind this study, which has not gained much attention of our educational researchers in past years in Nigeria.
1.2            Statement of the Problem
Educational facilities and students performance in Adeyemi College of Education have called for investigation.
It has been mentioned earlier that this aspect of educational research had been neglected for a very long time.  This ascertion then calls for the need to explore into the neglected section so as to bring the awareness to the government concerned and the society in general.  This is necessary for educational facilities both personal and materials and its undoubted contributions toward the excellent performance of our high institutions of learning.
1.3            Purpose of the Study
The objective of this research is specifically to find out the impacts educational resources on students performance in the college of education.
Other objectives of the study are as follows:
i.                        To examine the adequate of education facilities for effective and productive teaching/learning in college of education.
ii.                        To determine the difference between the students academic performance in schools with adequate educational facilities and in these with inadequate facilities.
iii.                        To find out the degree of adequacy of provision of learning resources in college of education.
iv.                        To identify sources of educational resources that may influence the performance rate of the students in our colleges of education.
1.4            Research Questions
The following research question were formulated to guide the research work:
1)                Is there any relationship between the staffing quota and students performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo state?
2)                Is there any relationship between the survey of physical facilities and student performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo in Ondo state?
3)                Is there any relationship between the school environment and students performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo in Ondo state?
4)                Is there any cordial relationship between the lecturers and students performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo in Ondo State?

The following null hypothesis were generated for the research work:
1)                There is no significant relationship between the staffing quota students performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo in Ondo state.
2)                There is no significant relationship between the survey of physical facilities and students performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo in Ondo state.
3)                There is no significant relationship between the school environment and students performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo in Ondo state.
4)                There is no any cordial significant relationship between the lecturers and students performance in Adeyemi college of education Ondo in Ondo state.
1.6            Significance of the Study

The major strategies for the achievement and equalization of individuals access to educational opportunities as laid down in the third national plan (1993 – 1996) is to ensure that all schools promote sound and effectives teaching in particular.
To this end, it is hoped that the study will provide useful information to Nigeria advanced learners and lecturers, school administrators and government alike about the probabilities, possibilities potentialities of such study.
1.7            Delimitation of the Study
This study focused attention on the availabilities of facilities and how they affect the overall performance of the students in colleges of education.  The study concentrates on a few selected departments in Adeyemi college of education, Ondo state.  Some senior members of staff as well as some educational administrators play important roles in the research exercise.  The study covers the period from 1994 – 1998 academic sessions.
1.8            Definition of Terms
EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES: These are the essential resources that are needed for the effective operation and maintenance of any institution of learning.  It include both personal and material resources.
PERSONNEL: In this study personnel is referring to as the staff, persons employed in the school.  In short lecturers qualify and effectiveness is referring to as personnel.
EDUCATION: There are many definitions for education his future usefulness to self, society and to the nation as a whole.
FACILITIES: Is the provision of adequate building, equipment, lecturers etc. for development and success of education in a country.
