CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF RURAL URBAN MIGRATION ON THE PEOPLE OF OKA AKOKO SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ONDO STATE
ABSTRACT
This project looked the causes and
effects of rural – urban migration on the people of Oka Akoko South local
government Area of Ondo State. Data were collected through the use of selecting
place and quarters to be sampled, Quarter selected on the basis of quarter
population, quarter with high population density usually migrate to urban
centre. Also the view of young men and
women were also considered. The data analysis was collected and will be coded,
frequency counts. Also made accordingly
and the data generated will be subjected to simple percent – ages for
critically examine the research questions, earlier on stated in chapter one. The
research designed used was descriptive design and the major instruments used
were adopted to ensure that accurate and necessary information needed were
collected for the research. They include
the use of Questionnaire, participant observation, collection of data,
interview with people. Also in this
write up, recommendation were offered such as that the government should give
adequate protection to the indigenous firm and at the same time encourage
foreign investor in Nigeria,
especially in the rural area of local government and Headquarters.

INTRODUCTION
Background to the study
Rural – urban migration is the
movement of people from the rural areas to the urban centres. It has then become the concern at the
Nigerian Government to do something about Rural – Urban migration.
This originated from the rapid growth
of the urban population which is believed that the result from this rapid
areas.
This migrants are blamed for the
population growth and is beyond the two economics resources and also create
some urban problems such as; unemployment and other attendant if social crises
that are majorly concerned to Nigeria Government; these are problems posed by
the highly visible consequency of rural urban migration such as:
§ Consequently, hardly aday passes
without a government functionary or some other concerned citizens decrying the
exodus of able bodies growth from rural area.
§ Growing of unemployment and under
employment.
§ General shortage of social amenities
such as water, good roads, network, electricity supplies.
§ The depopulation of rural area
through daily newspaper and other media that some ways its may be found to stem
the tide of immigrants to the town.
The remarkably high annual growth
rate of major urban centres with the attendant dislocation of urban social
infrastructure resulting in traffic congestion.
The strategy usually suggested for
turning potentials urban migration to rural stayers amount to various aspects
of rural economic development and from settlement scheme and projects aimed at
checking the movement of people from rural area to urban centres often failed
due to the problem and the target population, administrative difficulties and
inadequate specification of wrong choice of the farm settlers in case of farm
settlement scheme, financial problem and mismanagement of the public fund here
and there.
Statement of the Problem
In many third world countries like Nigeria,
Indian, etc. rural – urban migration has caused over urbanization and depopulation
of rural areas.
The selective migration of highly
intelligent skilled individual from less to more affluent countries has
resulted in the problem of “brain drain “ for various countries many government
have sought alternative for migration such as economics development and land
reform in the regions of outflows.
The socio – economic crises caused by
rural – urban migration has been hunting his mind for long. This is what prompted the choice of this
research work.
Objectives of the study
The research on the causes and
effects of rural urban drift in Oka Akoko South Local Government Area of Ondo
State was designed to contribute not only to the literature on rural – urban
migration in Nigeria
but to aid rural – urban development policy making. The research work is meant specifically to
expose the causes of rural – urban migration and examine its effects both
positively and negatively on the people and suggestion on a workable
recommendation to the appropriate quarter and policy makers.
Research Question
The research question for the purpose
of this study are:

are the causes of rural urban migration on the people of Oka Akoko?

are the effect of rural urban migration on the people in Oka Akoko?
3)
What
are the possible solution to the causes and effects of rural urban migration?
Relevance of the study
The importance of this study is to
know the causes and effects of rural urban migration in Oka Akoko South Local
Government Area of Ondo State.
This studies will be a source of
reference to any student who will like to study this topic in the nearest
future to know the right approach to it.
Delimitation of the study
This study will cover five quarters
in Oka and they are Iboje, Ikoso, Ibaka, Ikanmu
and Agbo. During my research survey
selected houses will be visited.
The survey will also cover necessary
information and data needed from Oba Olubaka of Oka Akoko in his palace and
Akoko South local government staff. Oka
is in Akoko South local government area of Ondo State. It is one of the up Akoko South local
government in Ondo
State.
It comprises of many quarter namely
Agba, Ibaka, Ikanmu, Ebo, Ikese, Iboje, Owase, Iwonrin, Okin, Ebinrin Idofin,
Korowa, Owake, Okado and Owalusin.
It has a population of about twenty
four thousand in habitants. It is
bounded in the west by Akungba supare and Eti
Ore in the south by Afo, Ikun,
and Oba in the worth by Ikare and Isho.
Oka is situated in a thick forest which
is protected by hills which serve as natural defence. The land is good for production of such foods
crops like yam, cocoyam, maize, plantation of vegetables and cash crops like
cocoa, coffee and palm produce.
Definition of Terms
Migration:
This is the movement of people from one geographical area to another, involving
permanent or temporary residence or settlement by: Afunga Onyan, 1996.
Urban migration:
This is the movement of people from city to city e.g. Lagos
to Abuja. By Garba Isiaka, 1999.
Rural migration:
This is the movement of people from village to village.
Urban – Rural migration: This is the movement of the people from one urban rural
area to another area.
Rural – urban migration: This is the movement of people from rural area. e.g.
village to urban centre like Ibadan.
According to Adekunle Aromolaran,
rural – urban migration is one of the major social problem in Nigeria development that causes in
balance in economy from rural – urban to another.
