 CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction
A quest for meaning of theatre in education reveals that a perception of education itself. Education therefore could be described as an internal process, a subtle progression within the individual child. The ultimate goal of this is to achieve a blend between self awareness and social integration between self-discovery and practical knowledge of life. In an attempt to fulfill this, the theatre has a unique role of play. As a mode of human communication, drama has always been perceived as the oldest of human arts. Its romance with education therefore entails a well blended collaboration between principles and objectives of drama and education.
As drama is conceived with action, with doing and seeing’ and so, teaching is not short of processing of action and communication. For example, Aristotle reputedly walked while teaching while Socrates practically demonstrated the value of dialogue in the pedagogical process, both were therefore actor – teachers so, the modern day teacher has a lot to learn from the actor in the application of the peripatetic and Socratic principles.
Gordon Vallines (1971) posits that the general purpose of education is to foster the growth of what is individual in each human being at the same time harmonizing the individual thus seduced with the organic unity of the social group to which the individual belongs. So also drama encourages the development of individual personnel resources. These resources are those of sensory perception, intellect, imagination, powers of concentration, physical and verbal skills and emotional control.
The theatre as an English word according to Babatope (1998) connotes a number of things; a room where medical operations are performed, a place for acting plays, the profession of acting playmaking and everything connected with it. Conceptually, theatre involves practicability which is the utmost necessity for performance. Theatre is therefore not just performing but performing for an audience. This now brings to the limelight the importance of audience to the theatre. No theatrical activity can take place without an audience.
Children Theatre and Drama
Creative drama includes dramatic activities and games used primarily in educational settings with children. Its roots in the United States began in the early 1900s. Winifred Ward is considered to be founder of creative drama in education, establishing the first academic use of drama in Evanston, Illinois.
Children theatre is a term give to the form of drama that exists for the child audience. It is a formal theatrical experience, which a group of professional theatre practitioners, amateurs or older children act a play for other children. The child in the audience is a spectator not a participant.
Significance of the Study
The use of drama method in the teaching and learning process is becoming increasingly popular today, especially in the primary and junior secondary schools. Researchers have pointed out that children remember what they see more than what they hear, hence the use of drama and theatre n teaching.
Many studies have been carried out as to the use of drama and theatre in the teaching and learning of different subjects in secondary and post secondary schools (Owolabi, 2005). But the studies are mostly confined to these levels whereas the younger ones that need the methodology are often ignored. This study is therefore designed to look at the use of drama and theatre as a methodology of teaching and learning in primary and junior secondary school. This will go a long way in filling the gap between the theories and practices of learning propounded for pre-school age children, children in primary and junior secondary schools.
Statement of the Problem
A gap exists in the theory of teaching and learning for young children and actual practices in Nigeria. Most of the researches designed for young people in Nigeria are based on children outside the country. This makes it extremely difficult for teachers especially at this level, to put this theory into practice. Teachers in primary schools particularly, are still set on the now archaic method of teaching such as lecture method, rather relying heavily on repetition by rote to make the pupils remember instead of the more simple and modern methods of teaching such as play-way method (drama method) demonstration or discovery methods.
This is what this study set out to find out the extent to which drama and theatre as a pedagogical tools being used and to what effectiveness in primary schools.
Purpose of the Study
This study is set out to investigate the impact of children drama and theatre as communicative art in education, that is, teaching and learning and also to find out the effectiveness of the use in teaching and learning and make appropriate recommendation.
Aims and Objectives of the Study
This study aims at making clear, vivid the virtual fact that the theatre and drama is a viable medium through which the child can be conscientized and impacted with morals and values that will be of the use to the child in the child’s everyday life. It will also reveal how the child can learn as well as absorb useful knowledge from their experiences in the theatre. The aim of this study will focus generally on how the child can grasp faster what he/she has been taught through the theatre.
