THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER AND LOCATION ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN INTEGRATED SCIENCE
ABSTRACT
This project is concerned with the influence of gender and location on the performance of students in integrated science. The researcher therefore adopted questionnaire method to collect information from the students. The objective of the project as stated bellow guided the write ups throughout. Hence these objectives are as follows:
  1. To identify the influence of gender on the performance of students in integrated science.
  2. To identify the influence of location performance of students in integrated science.
  3. To know the performance of both male and female performance in the study of integrated science in junior secondary schools.
  4. Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The data collected was analyzed using simple X2 From the study it was revealed that male students do not perform better than their female counterpart in integrated science
  5. On the average, students from schools in rural areas perform better than the students from urban schools.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
This is an era of science and technology. It is a period of great global exception in terms of scientific and technological advancement. As a result of this Oyekan (1993) opined that a hopeful desire for science and technology might be hampered by student under achievement cause by lack of science or scientific skill. According to him, science, technology and integrate science are interwoven and there can neither be scientific growth nor technology advancement without a sound knowledge of integrated science.
Chukwu (2000) lamented that students and teachers do not see the nature and practical connection between the science and integral concepts. He explained and expatiated that the provision of the science curriculum and other integral requirements of science subjects are based on science ethic and principle. In view of these developments through the globe, teachers are therefore charged with the responsibility to develop students’ mental ability, the ability to reason and manipulate as well as the skill to solve science problems. Apart from the ability to use science principles and ethics to be applied in logical reasoning inference. Inclusive therefore, integrated science is a very important subject. There is hardly any science oriented discipline that does not require the knowledge of integrated science e.g physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and other earth sciences. Integrated science is a compulsory subject for all junior secondary schools students; the expectation is that adequate exposure of students to the knowledge of (mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) as an integral science course will have facilitative effect on their achievement in subjects. Ali (1997). All over the world, findings revealed that gender factors streamline female into profession such as teaching, catering, secretarial activities banking etc, nowadays there are growing interest among female to participate in field that were formally dominated by males such as physics, meteorologist, science tutors and laboratory management among others. Critically looking at these areas of study, where integrated science is involved, one cannot be scientifically exploited and developed without integrated science. The influence of environment reported both positive and negative impact on subject areas, for instance there is an erroneous believe that students from urban areas perform better in integrated science examination than those from rural areas. This may be due to their exposure outside the classroom which student from rural area may not have. Personally, student from rural area can perform better or competed with their mates from urban area due to the following reasons: if their parents are teachers of science course or if they have senior ones that have more knowledge on some of the science subjects, or if the child creates interest on integrated science there is a tendency to perform better.
The type of friend or peer group they move with also is a vital reason to be considered. Integrated science can be viewed as the foundation of real science. It is very important and vital; that every science minded individual should be acquainted with integrated science. Some people believe without any empirical support that because male are regarded as the dominant and ever superior sex they intrinsically have better brains and learn more better than females.
Research by Ukwuwagwu (2002) showed that differences had not always favored one gender. In Nigeria, considerable effort had been expended on how gender effects can be implicated in the poor performance of girls in integrated science. Unfortunately these research efforts have not produced any definite clear cut picture from their findings as they do not agree on the magnitude and direction of gender differences in performance in integrated science. According to a report cited by Owolabi (2009) that female students do better due to their compatibility of biological make up and caring from their parents perform bellow expectation due to parent’s abandonment and uncaring attitude of parents. In conclusion ability to prepare and put to test hypothesis makes male students perform better than female counterparts either at internal external examination in the secondary school level.

Purpose of the Study
This study specifically sought out influence of student gender and school location on student’s performance in integrated science as they are as follows:
  1. The study is aimed at making useful suggestion and recommendation for means that can bring about improvement to the problem of student gender and school location in the poor performance of students in integrated science.
  2. The study will also show maybe the environment that the students find themselves provide positive or negative to their performance in school.
  3. The study will help to ascertain if there were variations between male and female students performance in integrated science.
  4. The research will also help to provide useful information and illustration for teachers and school administrators.

Research Hypothesis
The following hypotheses are used in this research.
  1. There is no significant difference between the performance of male students in rural area and male students in urban area.
  2. There is no significant difference between the performance of female students in rural and female students in urban area.
  3. There is no significant difference between the performance of female students in urban areas and male students in urban areas
  4. There is no significant difference between the performances of male students in rural areas.
Significance of the Study
The research is considered significant especially in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State because it will help to develop the influence of student gender towards the performance of students in Integrated science. It will help students to contribute positively to the development of the society and inculcate in their future generations right attitudes towards integrated science. It will also create awareness to the parents in the needs to view education of their children as an obligations that must be fulfilled.
Delimitation of the Study
The study is delimited to the influence of student’s gender and school location of student’s academic performance in integrated science in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State
Definition of Terms
All terms used in the study are operationally defined as they are used in the content of this research.
Gender: The characteristics of being a male or female as a qualitative gender.
Location: Surrounding which implies the adaptation where people lie which ay be rural or urban.
Performance: The result of expected or unexpected outcome fro a given assignment
Technology: This is science which deals with industrial art or the knowledge/ use of mechanical arts an applied science.
Psychology: This is the study of the mind and hoe it works.
Influence: This is an effect whether positive or negative on any case study.
