CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
In the olden days women are generally regarded as weaker sex and biologically inferior to their man counterparts. In this regard, there were no working class women in the society. They were only relegated to domestic matters and were regarded as full house wives (Johnson 2004).
Generally then, women had enough and more time to spend looking after their homes. So therefore there was less demand for labour saving equipment in homes. To a large extent women devoted all their time and energies to complete their household responsibilities and take adequate care of their families as well. But today the notion that women are inferior to their men counterparts no longer hold, consequently, women had been competing favourably with men especially in business endeavours governmental work as well as active participation in public life.
In view of the above, women no longer have enough time to carry out their daily domestic tasks. This change in the role of women in the society therefore made the need for labour saving equipment in the homes to become necessary and essential. More importantly with modern invention in technology and civilization the ancient house hold utensils like mortar and pestle, grinding stone, manual washing plates and clothes and also the use of needle to sew clothes had become obsolete. This is because it is preferable and more comfortable to use labour saving equipment to carry out domestic activities since these equipment will definitely safe time and energy.
In having modern equipment in the home one would be able to prepare variety of foods like bread, biscuit snacks, cake etc. easily and fastly. A woman who uses pounding machine in preparing food will enjoy using the gadget because it is quicker and also will save her time and energy than the housewife using pestle and mortar. Generally, there are various labour saving equipment that are essential to the housewife in the house. Some of these are mixing machine, yam pounder, toaster, gas or electric cooker, vacuum cleaner, carpet sweeper, washing machine, water heater, dish water, chinchin cutter e.t.c.
