A COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT ON THE AVAILABILITY OF READERS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ABSTRACT
This research work investigated the availability of readers in some
selected secondary schools which involved both private and public secondary
schools Ekiti State,
particularly Ikere-Ekiti Local Government Area of Nigeria as a case study. Readers or
textbook remains one of the major teaching/learning resources used in schools.
This research work therefore examined how the availability of textbooks
enhanced the educational activities of students in both public and private
schools, how it affected the performances of the students, the qualification
and experience of the teachers, the unethical practices of teachers who usually
use the readers or textbooks to remain lazy and idle and other acts which are
detrimental to achieving educational goals which have done more harm than good
to the nation’s educational system. This project stressed the need to make
English language lesson easy and enjoyable through the use of instructional
aid/improvisation. The poor performance in English language in most public and
private secondary schools are due to the fact that its teaching is textbook
dominated. The teachers do not have regular supply of teaching aids and where
they are available they are so inadequate and obsolete The cost of purchasing
these visual aids is quite enormous. It therefore becomes necessary for
teachers and facilitators to improvise aids so as to bridge the gap between learners
real world and the abstract foreign English world. This study is very significant
because, it would be of immense benefit to the students, teachers, government,
curriculum planners, educational administrators and the policy makers It was
found that the government had vital roles in the provision of textbooks in the
country at large and in secondary schools. It was also observed that there
could be better materials such as technological tools, audio and video
recordings, newspapers and journals other than the textbooks in places where
there are no readers. The research was carried out through the descriptive
research design. A sample of 300 students and 20 teachers which include 5
public and 5 private secondary schools where the students were randomly
selected for the study and the research instrument which was the questionnaire
and the close option type with the simple descriptive percentage method. The
result showed that the availability of readers have great effect on the
performance of students in both public and private secondary schools in their
learning of English language and the teacher’s teaching methodology and how the
population size of the students affect the availability of readers to the
students in both public and private secondary schools. The study therefore
recommended among other things that the school, the government, parents should
encourage reading culture, provision of adequate textbooks for the students in
both public and private secondary schools; well equipped and structured library
should be put in place for the students and they should try as much as possible
to equip the students with technological knowledge and make use of other
teaching aid apart from their recommended texts.
